Wickersley's name comes from the Old Norse personal name Vikarr and the Old English lēah, a woodland clearing. Richard FitzTurgis, who took the name de Wickersley, founded nearby Roche Abbey, and the parish church of St Alban is one of the village's oldest buildings.
Today Wickersley is home to around 7,400 people, with independent bars and restaurants at its centre. The A631 Bawtry Road runs through the village and junction 1 of the M18 is close by, putting Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster within easy reach.
