A pit village with Norse roots
A quick sense of the place we manage property in — and why it works for landlords.
Thurcroft's name has Norse roots and was first recorded in 1319, but the village really grew with Thurcroft Colliery, sunk around 1909. By 1947 the pit employed over 2,000 men, and many of the homes built in that era still stand - solid terraced and semi-detached houses that remain dependable rental stock today.
The colliery closed in 1991, and Thurcroft has since settled into life as a commuter village of around 6,900 people (including Morthen). With the M1 and M18 both within easy reach, it is well placed for Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster, which keeps good family homes in steady demand.
Village life centres on landmarks like the stone-built Church of St Simon and St Jude (1937) and the Gordon Bennett Memorial Hall.
