Anston has a claim to fame few villages can match: stone from its Anston Stones quarry was shipped to London to rebuild the Houses of Parliament after the fire of 1834. Today Anston — split between the older South Anston and the larger North Anston — is a popular commuter village of around 9,200 people. It sits close to the M1 with Sheffield and Rotherham within easy reach, and the surrounding countryside, including the Anston Stones Wood nature reserve, adds to the appeal.
